The Korean ‘trend’ going to a higher level?

rohmoohyun_240509

As we all are aware, I was away for the whole day of yesterday and got to know of the news later, shocking news of South Korea’s ex-president Roh Moo Hyun had committed suicide on 23rd May during hiking.

Though this is not very much related to the Kpop zone, it definitely does highlight the recent trend of Koreans in the limelight – entertainers, singers and now political figures – taking their own lives.

It’s time people start doing something about this because I believe the matter holds more than what it seems.

In short, former president Roh Moo Hyun (62), shamed by a corruption scandal that tarnished his image as a “clean” politician, jumped to his death during hiking in the mountains near his rural home. He was rushed to the hospital after that but was reported dead at 9.30am.

He also left a suicide note for his family and the police is currently investigating into the case.

This suicide case, the first by a South Korean political figured, shocked the nation and many. Read the rest of the article here. (Aaren for the link)

As much as I am saddened by this news, I am pretty much disgusted by it.

As many of us has known and have voiced our say about it, we are seeing way too much suicide cases surfacing in the media.

Just last year, we had the shocking case of serial suicide of sorts case by broadcast Ahn Jae Hwan and his good friend actress Choi Jin Shil, who both left behind their loved ones, wives and children.

And then, this became like a starting milestone of the whole series of the other suicides. There was this whole outrage on suicide copycats after the tragedy. 2 women, 55 years old and 30 years old, were found dead on the same day of Choi Jin Shil‘s death. Their deaths, similar to that of Choi Jin Shil’s death, they were found hanging by elastic bands.

And then there were the entertainer suicides M Street’s Lee Seo Hyun, Jang Chae Won and the recent case of Boys Over Flowers cast Jang Ja Yeon – all pointing to the dark sides of entertainer lives.

Just 2 days back we have the case of new singer Blue Spring member JooSeo who left what seemed like suicide notes on his minihompy and went missing. The incident got many netizens worrying that he may do something nasty. A police search was also held and he was found unconscious in the charnel house where his late father’s remains were put to rest. He was sent to the hospital for treatment and sufers no major injuries or health damage.

I don’t how all these events may appear to you, but to me, they may seem unconnected, but in fact they are much connected in a bigger picture.

Suicide copycats, suicide letters, hanging to death, entertainers – plus we have the media which magnifies the whole case going on. Not forgetting all the young ones who are following the media closely.

Are we set to see this whole suicide trend gong on to a higher level?

No surprises now, because we even have modern political figures doing it.

Meanwhile, all broadcast programmes for today have been cancelled to pay tribute to the late former presidents. So no Inkigayo for today.

And, my condolences of course.

  1. Вопрос к автору , а вот у вас время у каждой статьи и в комментариях пишется… Это какое? Московское? Заранее спасибочки за ответ.

  2. Хороший блог :) Люблю почитывать каждую ночь (ну и в другое время тоже :) ).

  3. what about the normal people of korea?

  4. I asked my Korean friend about this and he said it’s because Koreans, by nature are very emotional…

But that still doesn’t explain why people commit suicide easily…

I think Korea as a society needs to be able to handle pressure better. And the people who are constantly giving the pressure need to know when to stop…(aka current president, big shots in the entertainment world).

  5. Reading this article gave me chills. All those suicide cases. Geez, so terrible. I didn’t know about the suicides and suicide copycats that happened last yr.

I had already discovered that all the TV shows were cancelled because the former president passed away. But hadn’t known why or how…

My condolences to Roh Moo Hyun’s family. :3

  6. And what sucks more is that is has to be my birthday. Here I am waiting for my weekly present and a president decides to go kill himself.

    Suicide? Not something I respect.

  7. Good Post.

Seriously when i heard that the S.Korean former prime minister committed suicide (on BBC channel news), it made me realize that suicide may be a bigger problem in Korea than what the media is making out. I just can’t comprehend why such a public figure head would do something soo..immature? Just imagine what kind of message this sends out to the public of Korea especially the younger generations, that if stuff don’t go the way you plan just end your life. Its pretty disgusting. Children in Korea probably watch the news and have a good idea what Suicide is. My lil brother who’s 9 wouldn’t know what it is. Slowly i think people are getting used to seeing suicide cases on TV which is NOT a normal thing. Its gradually becoming normalize which is what i fear most.

  8. ……RIP

  9. Korea has such a judemental culture that I’m not surprised.
These people talk without filtering it through their minds first and someone ends up really angry or really hurt.
People commit suicide because they feel that there is no other way when there are so many other options.
One would think that in a collective language and culture people would look out for each other, but clearly they don’t.
The fact that a country has TREND of suicides should raise red flags of awareness. It just astounds me that when a Korean in the limelight commits suicide, people grieve yet take no action to stop further cases. But just a few weeks ago two young boys committed suicide within a few days of each other here in the U.S. due to bullying at school and the whole country was in an uproar as to wondering why?

  10. okay not being insensitive, since this happened yesterday, thats why there was no music core either right? anyways this year and last year has been a very depressing time. especially this year, not even half way over and so many deaths… i hope their families are doing okay… =(

  11. it has to be stop, henceforth
cause apprehension to becomes “trend”, so sad
    people become depression lately…..

life isn’t simple but isn’t hard though
cheer up each other is needed

  12. Yes it’s like a trend out there with Korea..especially with the stars. I never heard of so many stars committing suicide within one year..it’s terrible.

  13. Оценка 5, базару ноль

  14. It’s frustratingly saddening to say the least.

RIP and my condolences to all of the victims.

  15. typo *i mean suicide should not an option*

  16. i heard this on the news last night…omg what is wit koreans and Suicide, the must have the world highest rate of Suicide! every couple of months some one is killing themselves.

like you said sookyeong, as sad as this news it’s also pretty disgusting, and i find people who do this sorta of thing reali selfish, don’t they every think abt the people their leaving behind. and the pain that their gonna put them thro! their suicide should never be an option!
