Kpop to invade the Philippines this November!

kpop_190909

Pinoys can finally meet their favorite Korean stars in November—but only if they demand it.

To celebrate the 60th anniversary of the Philippines-Republic of Korea Diplomatic Relations, the Korean embassy is holding a cultural festival November this year.

The festival will also cap year 2009 as the “Philippines-Republic of Korea Friendship Year,” as stated by Proclamation No. 14298 signed by Pres. Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo last May 2008.

PEP had a chance to talk to Kiejoo Kim, Counselor for the Korean Embassy in the Philippines, last Thursday, Sept. 17, at Shangri-La Plaza Cinema 3 during the press screening for the upcoming Korean Film Festival in Shangri-La Plaza Cinema 3.

Kim said his Embassy is planning to bring Korean performers to the country.

“We are looking forward to a lot of events in November,” he said. “There will be a cultural event, and we are going to invite cultural performers from Korea so that we can share our cultural legacy.”

PEP asked Kim if the Korean Embassy is planning to include among the cultural performers the Korean pop (K-pop) stars currently making waves in the Philippine music scene today.

“I’m not in a position to guarantee who we can bring to the RP,” Kim answered. “We will try our very utmost to bring our well-renowned Korean stars so that we can really enjoy together with the Filipino people.”

But Kim quickly added that the plan can push through easily if Pinoys loudly voice out their demand, using surveys, blogs, signature drives, and other platforms.

“I think if there is a certain, a great number of audience, I think that should be a very convincing rationale that we really have to bring them here,” Kim affirmed.

Besides, Kim said, the cultural festival will be borne out of “gratitude” felt by the Koreans to the Filipinos, who helped them achieve democracy and freedom in their country 54 years ago.

In 1950, the Philippines sent 7,000 troops to the East Asian country to fight in the Korean war, which ended five years later. It was fought between the Republic of Korea (South) and the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (North).

Kim added that this “sound” relationship made way for the two countries to forge close ties and enhance cooperation in other fields, like education.

Kim explained that similarities between the two cultures paved way for Koreans to migrate to the Philippines. This is why Pinoys enjoy Korean pop culture, he added.

“I think it’s because of cultural affinity, and the way we feel grateful for the Filipino people. I personally feel quite amazed how the Filipino people enjoy and appreciate telenovela from Korea. That is so impressive, we really appreciate that you enjoy the Korean culture so much.”

Examples of drama series that became hits in the Philippines are Autumn In My Heart, Jewel In the Palace, Full House, Stairway to Heaven, and Lovers In Paris—the last two currently being adapted by GMA-7 and ABS-CBN, respectively, as local versions.

And even if Korean songs are not played over the Philippine radio, legions of Pinoy fans are still using the Internet to enjoy music from K-pop stars like Wonder Girls, Rain, SNSD, Super Junior, DBSK, Se7en, BoA, TVXQ, 2PM, Big Bang and 2NE1’s Sandara Park.

Comments translated:

  • “I hope Super Junior and 2PM will come!”
  • “I like this for the sake of the friendship of the two countries. But I don’t think the fanbase for K-Pop is big enough for such event. Safe bet to come is 2NE1 because of Sandara Park.
  • “Yeah Nobody is cute. I want your body, your money not you! (a parody on Nobody by Filipinos)”
  • “I became a fan of K-Pop songs because of BoF and Kim Hyunjoong.
  • “I also watch Korean shows and I know a lot of K-Pop artists. What I can say is that they aren’t as good as perceived to be. Bigbang is only patterned after B2K, Super Junior is cute but too similar to NSYNC. Rain is world-class but is still a copycat of Usher and JT.”
  • “No idea on why other Filipinos are so crazy over K-Pop to think they aren’t that good, they only have a good image when it comes to packaging (fashion and looks).”
  • “Let other people live but that’s (K-Pop) what we like. Though I would agree about them being not too talented especially girl group who play too cutesy. Their singers barely belt as well.”
  • “No thanks. I only follow K-Pop because of Sandara and only Sandara. But if she isn’t, the hell I care. No doubt Filipino singers could outsing them.”
  • “Korean wave is in the Philippines yeah!”
  • “Filipinos should just focus on supporting our own music industry.”

Meanwhile, Super Junior‘s ‘Sorry Sorry’ album released in the Philippines on 4th September is flying off music charts there.

Though there are mixed feelings about the Kpop invasion as can be seen from the netizens’ responses – Kpop is indeed invading many parts of Asia.

Meanwhile, Pinoy Kpoppers, holla! 🙂

  5. I think K-POP being in the Philippines is sobrang silly!
    First of all do we understand what they are saying in their songs? We play Korean music but do the Koreans play our Tagalog songs? Haha I do not think so… were I live in the Philippines the Koreans are very mean! Filipinos are not allowed to stay at their hotels and visit their stores. There are good Koreans but the majority I met are mean and rude to Filipinos! Philippines stop copying Korean dramas and songs!

  26. duuuuuuuuuhhhhhhhhh this comments are all my opinion,MIIKA here in this site everyone states their own opinion and I have my rights to say how I react towards this situation. remember MIIKA everyone has a right to say anything here !!! and duuhh please read before you comment did I say all FILIPINOS .Tsss I don’t remeber saying that all Filipinos are crazy, before you comment on what I say please read it first carefully. I have Filipino friends who really act like a Korean, they were very trying hard ,they speak and dressed up like one and it really looks pathetic, they sing those KPOP songs so badly and they told me that nowadays Filipino usually to that to act like Korean even if they’re not one of them. They were really going insane over this guyz, look how crazy of them doing those things for me it really sucks. And I believe that no one has the right to get mad at all. I have the right to say whatever I feel towards the situation and you must REMEMBER THAT.tssssssssss! In any way they should’ve still appreciate their own music !!!

  27. I became a fan of K-pop since last year. I was really annoyed with the fact that BOF was going to air in the phillippines. and was angry when k-pop was starting to take over. It was like everything I worked hard for like watching and waiting for the bof episodes online, has just popped out of the tv like that. yeah it sucks. but now. im still depressed but starting to cool down.. well since kpop is “exposed” already, then bring out big bang, ft island, suju, wg 2ne1 and all the others out.

    yes and about the racism thing. I remember good o’l uglyyubin, the one with the twitter account but now the account is suspended. yeah she said stuff like “hope it keeps raining on you fillipino monkeys ” or something lke that. first i was angry. but then i thought NOT ALL KOREANS ARE LIKE HER. some koreans are actually nice.

    @prettygirl, i kinda feel what you are saying about the posers. yes thats the reason i dont like kpop to go out in the phil. but what you’re saying is a little too much. And FYI, not ALL filipinos are like what you’re saying. And whats the connection of being a “feeler” to crazy people?

  28. 2NE1………………2NE1………….. DARA PARK…

  29. BIG BANG, DBSK, SUJU! PLEASE, AND THANK YOU! :>

    Lol XD

  30. dddddddduuuuuhhhhhhhhhhh filipino people are crazy!!! super obsessed really! psycho REALLY a pycho!

  31. some of you guyz want them cause of the looks huh tsssssssssssssssss!!!

  32. KPOP SHOULD NOT INVADE THE PHILIPPINES IT’S DEFINITELY A NO NO NO NO
    FILIPINOS SHOULD SUPPORT THEIR OWN MUSIC NOT OTHER MUSIC AND BESIDES THIS WILL JUST REMAIN IN A SHORT TIME!!! HATE THOSE FILIPINO FEELERS !!! THEY SHOULD BE CONSULTING THE MENTAL HOSPITAL FOR BEING THOSE CRAZY TO THOSE GUYS!!!

  33. i want SuJu to come! i mean, the 1st week of its sales, and its already reached number 1 album of the week. i really think SuJu should come. 😛 mygaaash, filipinos who are saying that kpop is not good, and saying that we are racists, i think you are the racist, its not that we disrespect filipino singers but saying that filipino artists is just rude, we dont even compare kpop artists to filipino artists.

  34. ..please!!!let them come here!!!especially SUJU!!!OMG!!!please let them come here!!!!!!

  38. Im a filipino, and been into KPOP just recently, after I watched Boys Over Flowers in ABS-CBN and saw that most of the Korean artist can sing, dance, act and really good looking, honestly I cant think of any PH artist right now who can do this. Though I haven’t heard really good Korean singers yet, like filipino singers. Yes…before PH singers used to belt when performing, but young singers are quite different nowadays, just look at the performances of ASAP champions. Right now, Im really into SS501 songs, I think the melody of the Korean pop songs are really catchy & enjoyable, that’s why many pinoys come to like it even if they don’t understand the lyrics. It’s like tasting something different than what’s on the table.

    Anyways, for those other pinoy SS501 fans, there is an online petition for them to come in PH, please sign-up in case you want to see them too, here’s the link to the petition…http://www.gopetition.com/online/30807.html.

  39. Well, everyone is entitled to their own opinions. Liking artists aside from our own is not bad, its part of a healthy competition. Its called sharing culture and talents to others. We can all have the best of both worlds. So stop being racist, people!!!

    Well, I wished for 2PM to come to the Phils. a long time ago but now I can only wish for the 1:59PM.

    Well, I’m also a huge fan of other US & UK bands before but I do support KPOP bands now like DBSK and SuJu

    Have u ever known TVXQ/DBSK.. they’re not just about fashion and looks. They really have the talent!!! try watching their concerts.. they have the fashion, looks and especially the TALENT (imagine them singing live while dancing on a heavy beat like RISING SUN, PURPLE LINE & MIROTIC!)
    CASSIOPEIA being on guiness world records having 800,000 fans and now more than 1M is the proof that TVXQ is amazing!!!

    WTH.. this is the reasons why other cassies dont want kop to be known here for other filipinos would just bash and bash with their LITTLE KNOWLEDGE of kpop

  57. oh my gosh!! im super spazzing.. !!!! i just got hom from the big bang Philippines gathering and saw this!!!!!!!–i demand Big Bang!

    • GOSH. i really think i already met you. haha. i also went to the gathering. haha.

      and about kpop groups going to the philippines.
      OH MY GOODNESS this makes me excited.
      i really believe this time would come. hahaha.
      omo.

      we can’t celebrate fully though. there is this one condition. we should demand for them to come. so yeah.
      let’s all be optimistic and make this come true. <33

  58. “Filipinos should just focus on supporting our own music industry.”
    DUDE. I so agree with this!
    what’s up with flips digging up western music and Korean music?
    I mean Filipinos. Sorry got used using flips.
    I think they should support their own music industry. -.-
    I mean their music are all like ballad, love songs and sh*t.
    Imma flip ma self.

    • I’m not excited tho. coz I know they won’t come to my place.
      Which is far from the capital. lolol.

  59. OMGD!!!! Please make this happen!! Korean invasion is undoubtedly rocking the Philippines be it music, drama or fashion. I agree Filipino singers are really great but we don’t have the likes of 2ne1 and Big Bang here. When Sandy was here she can’t sing and dance like that. She really improved a lot. Filipinos are born with talent but Korea’s extensive training can make wonders. I can imagine how people would react when they see 2ne1 performing “Fire” live and Big Bang performing “Haru Haru” ggya….!! I can’t wait to see Jiyong!! Can he perform Heartbreaker as a bonus? LOL

  60. to all 2ne1 fans & Bigbang Fans in phil lets unite!!!!

  61. I LOVE YOU =))

  62. i hope they come here in philippines.. because i really love kpop.. especially super junior, big bang and 2ne1.

  63. OMG i wish they will really come here! bring 2ne1, 2pm, bigbang, SNSD, SuJu, Shinee, DBSK, all of them! hahaha!

  64. Philippes waiting for SNSD!!!! hope the girls could come here!!! soshi love!

    well 2ne1, bigbang, suju, shinee and 2pm could be the opening act for the girls… jk

    it would be a great honour for us filipinos if our fave kpop artists could come here in the phil!!! love it!!!

  65. wow this is the best news ever…
    bring BigBang, 2NE1 and DBSK in the philippines..
    and for the kpop haters,,, stop criticizing…

  66. bring them here!!!2ne1,BB esp.GDRAGON my gosh,suju of course!!!of course we are always open to changes,we just dont want OPM to die because of cutie cutie stuff of kpop hahaha of course BB are not included they really have good songs ,shame for those pinoy who thinks that OPM is boring(,hui LOVE OUR OWN!!!)

  67. I’m really excited..i expected this to come…i love koreans~! promise~! not only their music and their entertainment industry…i love them..i just don’t know why…^_^ wee~!

    filipinos♥koreans♥filipinos^_^

    heal the world..make it a better place…hehe^^

    ^_^…racist should die~! >.< haha~!^_^

  68. Filipinos are really hooked up with the internet, I think it would be succesful if they come here in the Philippines. Kpop artist attracts the young market and the young generation are goo fans right? just remember how well rain was received here when he visited philippines. He even had a commercial here. And kpop songs are entering music charts here in the philippines. 2ne1 would be a sure big hit! Filipinos love people who are good looking and that’s what the kpop artist have. Yes we have a lot of talents here, just like charice, she never went to stardom immediately here in the ph for we are used to talents like her….there are a lot of singers here who can do what she does. and i think that’s what makes kpop singers in here… they are new for our ears. Filipinos are also easily influenced by others. I think there would be no problem, ahm, oh i think they should learn to speak english first before they come here,,, Filipinos make fun of people with different language…..

    ;p

  69. Unless the Kpop Artist who would come would only sing english songs or tagalog if they could or else better not at all. It’s quite stupid to cheer for a song you dont even understand the lyrics. Korean singers are technically weak. Have you heard them winning international singing competition? Or leading in a broadway musical or winning a Tony award?

  70. how about a petition for this. of course to bring them here.

  71. safest bet is 2NE1. but like come on, AS MUCH AS WE WANT the boys to come, it’s pretty hard. the fanbase is not that big yet, and not to mention not enough to fill up a whole stadium. plus considering on what cost they will ask us to watch the “concert”? haha.

    so i’d rather have myself see the boys in the PH when PH is ready to give awesome concerts. like moving stage, fireworks during performance or whatsoever… you know what i mean. at least if we were to spend money we know that it is worthy.

    again, with ABSCBN, 2NE1 is the safest bet. 😉

    ~~~~~~~
    • i so agree with you. that’s why they’re always in thailand because they’re fanbase is bigger. i also agree that the safe bet is 2ne1 (even though i dont like them that much) becuase of sandara.
      SNSD is also possible becuase in soshified many are filipinos. 🙂 i hope they’d come!
  72. just found out the Sorry, Sorry cd has been released in PI and is doing well. http://www.pep.ph/guide/4720/Super-Junior-releases-Sorry-Sorry-CD-in-the-Philippines
    ok so bring SJ and 2NE1 here.:p
  73. just bring 2NE1, sandara still has a lot of fans in PI. kpop is just a fad because of nobody, it’s not even that big like the meteor garden craze in 2003.
  74. YAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!i love k-pop i’m just 11 yrs old but i like k-pop a lot i wish big bang,2pm,wonder girls and of course 2ne1!k-pop is really famous here in the philippines in my school,the craze is wonder girls’ nobody!not only in my school but everywhere else i promise.pls let them come here in the philippines!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  75. BRING THEM ALL HERE!!!!!!!!
    Haha! Im sure my korean classmates would be thrilled. I mean, koreans are like invading the Philippines to study. And so are their music. I love it! It blurs the boundaries of nations. Cool, eh?
    Im not against original filipino music but they’re just so boring.
    • OMFG! OH! please dont Generalised Filipino music are boring just the ballads. I know your a crazy KPOP fan now but do you understand what they are saying huh!? Im Kpop fan myself too only few groups that I support the rest are trash but my LOVE For our OPM music still there coz I can relate and understand them especially the Rock music.
      this is what I dont like Filipinos are really starting to be crazy Kpop fan now and disliking the Filipino music. HEY can you be guys just be fair. we all love different music and I can say we all do relate and inspired by these but by forgetting or saying “this and that blah blah” it will make us and Filipino artist Down.
  76. Let’s give the benefit of the doubt to everyone and I hope to see some Kpop artists here in the philippines. It will be a breathe of fresh air from all the western music and western concerts.
    I wish to see Big Bang most of all…damn…if tae was here…>.<
    so anyone knows where the petitions are going?
  77. lol I was going to write a long comment but I decided against it. I’m probably just gonna piss people off xD
    I’m just really upset at that Rain comment. He’s world-class for a very good reason. I don’t see many world-class Filipino singers.
    • Rain is not world class yet! His movies are not hitting into box office and he didn’t have any songs that are popular in the west. As for the Filipino singers, Lea Salonga is a broadway singer who have been acknowledged and performed at the Oscars.
      There are also other popular filipino singers but some of them were half and they recognized their filipino blood like:
      Apl d Ap of Black Eyed Peas
      Nicole of PCD
  78. the important is .. they’ll bring BIG BANG and 2NE1.. 2PM (still hoping jae is in the group. 😦 )
    and i wish the organizer is ABS-CBN..
    • OMFG, I SO AGREE WITH YOU !. I wish ABS-CBN will organize it. I’m hoping that they will come here. oh btw is there a petition or signaturing campaign? tell me if there is. I’m so excited for this. ^__^
  79. YAAAY! 🙂 well for them LOL, but it’s great kpop is spreading! 😀
    And guys dont need to go on and think a lot of filipinos don’t like kpop, I’ve seen so many other sites a while ago about this and everyone is already starting petitions and stuff.
    Seriously, their’s probably going to be more korean bands being in demand there. A lot of people there also like SS501, SNSD, and some celebrirites there already love big bang and of course 2NE1.
    They just haven’t shown their speaking up for it, YET.
    and plus it’s like 2 MONTHS AWAY!
    so we’ll all just wait and see 🙂
  80. 2NE1 will sure to be there…but they’ll be promoting their new album at the same time 😛
  81. I Want BIGBANG and 2NE1 to Come!!!!!!!
  82. IF THEY BRING 2NE1(sandara),WONDERGIRLS(nobody), AND SUJU(sorry,sorry) i’m sure a lot of people will come, but if they bring groups like 2pm,big bang,snsd,kara etc. etc. im sure only filipino kpoppers will go coz they’re not popular here.
    and for those saying they hate filipino music . SHAME ON YOU!!!!
    • are you kidding me? SNSD, and 2pm are popular in the phil!
      big also because of the lollipop collab with 2ne1!
  83. I’m a Filipino and I feel so embarrassed at what other people wrote about Korean Artists. Philippines and Korea have a great friendship and they end up bashing Koreans. This is why Philippines never move from its poverty, always bashing others and saying that they will support their own music but in reality they support Western music.
    Don’t worry, I don’t like KPop Artists coming here. I would rather go to Korea and watch them rather than here and have million of people bashing real talents.
    Fck I feel so pissed. Sorry.
    And BigBang have their own sense of style, thank you very much.
    I don’t care what other people think but KPop is great music.
    And if this could continue, it might just be SM Artists again. I want to see f(x) but the real artists I support are Shinhwa and BigBang. Bigbang might come but Shinhwa, err, no. Eric and Wan are on the army.
    Sheesh.
  84. 2ne1 and 2pm! >:) >:) suju and snsd >:) that will be great!
  85. i’m a pinoy kpop fan myself. i think with good planning, this event will be a success. Just like the Pops In Seoul event here. It was a short notice but thousands of kpop fans were present to support and watch PIS. (VJ Isak & Evan are the artists present); with all the balloons, light sticks, shirts and tarps…
  86. im a filipino… living in the states…
    and i love kpop!!!
    just my 2cents.
    i think filipinos should start appreciating asian music… (sometimes i feel that filipinos are sometimes not considered asian anymore T__T (pacific islander)_)
    filipino artists try too much to be western, which i dont blame because the west really do have a lot of musical influence… even kpop get influence from the west…
    but you know, it wouldnt hurt to know the music/culture of more nearby countries… and not just usa all the time…
    just because they don’t understand the lyrics/language… it shouldnt keep them away from kpop! man, i dont understand the lyrics but i sing them anyway…
    kpop–they make their own music, and perform them weekly as their own…
    ASAP/SOP–lots and lots of covers every single week… they always cover american music… or dance to american music… why can’t they do that to kpop?
    • exactly.
    • and what about our Filipino music!? Do they also appreciate it like whats happening now?
      and if ASAP/SOP dances to KPOP will Filipino appreciate it or will they understand the whole lyrics of that song?
      For sure people will have 2 sides of reasons to react to that. Like “Filipino artist trying or wannabe Kpop blah blah blah” and second “Good Filipino dances to kpop songs but theyre not good enough….” and so which side you are? This will make us more miserable, dont YOU think?
    • i really agree…i experience that even in my daily living…Filipinos must also appreciate Asian songs…not only western ones..
      and to the Filipinos being rude..not all are rude…most of us loves KPOP dearly and accepts them…others are only out of this world or sometimes not even interested into music and only wants political issues…:(
    • Exactly! There’s no reason to not like the Kpop. It’s good music. The Koreans like us. That’s why they come to our country. I like the Koreans too!!
      We try so hard to be Western, but you don’t see Hong Kong bragging about how they were colonized by England or Macau about Portugal. We’re not even that Western at all. I don’t like us trying to be something we’re not. We are Asian (uniquely Filipino), so I think we should embrace this (because we are Asian)!
      Koreans and Japanese listen to eachother’s music and American music and Chinese music and some European music, but you don’t see them complaining about how they don’t understand it. If it bothers them that much they look up the lyrics. I don’t see why we have to be stubborn!
      I’m excited for the KPop arrival! 🙂 🙂 *^^*
    • Yes we are Asian. Koreans listen to American music too, but you don’t see them complaining about not understand the lyrics.. We should be more accepting! I hope we can make FPop someday! We have enough alternative music … ahh it makes me so depressed. T_T
      I love Kpop and all Asian music! I can’t wait for the Kpop arrival!! =]
      • Geographically, Culturally, Filipinos are more Western. Look at your names. Surnames are miostly Spanish/European and most names are either English or Spanish.
        What’s the medium of Instruction in schools? ENGLISH
        Filipino are NOT trying hard to be Western. Filipinos tyr too hard to be the ‘traditional’ andstereotypical’ asian. hey, describe the AISAN culture to me? There isn’t any, FYI as Asia compromises os many nations with many cultures
        FYI, Macau and Hongkong embreace both their traditional culture and Western Influence. In fdact, in Macau, Portugese is an official language. So does in East Timor(the new born country). White for the Philippines, it’s trying to diassiociate itself and culutrally mutilating itself by denying and trying to erase westerness. What happened to the Spanish language? Now, they evne want English out. Funny, Eastt Timor embraces it’s colonial past, so does Singapore and Macau
        To Filipino: Be who you are. Do not try to be like the Chinese, Japanese, Korean or anything you percieve as ;asian’ from STEREOTYPES
  87. wow.. even though im filipino, some of the comments are so one-sided…
    not just because you’re a singer, you have to belt out every single note… O_O filipino singers do belt it out all the time… and it has become boring already…
    singers are entertainers… the important thing is KPOP is entertaining… something fresh to see…
    but i guess some people reject change and would rather see people belting it out rather than.. yknow, dancing and singing at the same time (which very few filipino artists do — they either sing or dance with power.. but not together.. except for billy crawford and gary v)
    i love kpop!!! i’m not in the philippines though.. T___T
    • again, exactly. Filipinos do not like changes.
      • But then, what is new with K-pop? it’s like a continuation of US/UK boyand era of the 90’s. Nothing new, really. Nothing resh either and dance steps are what we’ve seen from the lte Michael Jackson.
    • Exactly. I get so bored of all of the belting. And I’m Filipino, but I get sick of our stubbornness sometimes.
      KPop is great music and we have no reason to not like KPop!
      That’s why it’s hard for us to change anything here. I’m glad we’re getting a bigger KPop fanbase though. I can’t wait until they come! I hope our OPM can improve. Hopefully we could have better production studios and a few good guy and girl vocal/dance groups with a good name. What’s Sponge cola? I hope we don’t have another band that ends in “boys” too. So guido. So ’90’s haha.
      We understand Filipinos can belt it. But I want to see how well we can sing and dance and be fun. I want to dance to Filipino pop in the clubs for once! Not just Kpop and American pop. Even though I love them both 🙂
      Hurry and come to Manila KPop!!!
  88. OH CMON. FT ISLAND FTW!! God I hope they dont bring the non-popular ones. atleast idols please 😀 OMG HYORI!! CHAEYEON! SON DAMBI!! AHHHHHHH *goes crazy*
    For sure DBSK and 2PM are out of it cause of the legal issues and 2pm’s leadja leaving T,T Wonder Girls is a possibility, but they wont come back in korea until December 2009. So thats a MAYBE. After School is gonna have a comeback on october. SeeYa too. SuJu on tour. SNSD On hiatus.. FT Island’s honggi is busy. SS501 just came off a tour..
    Ok is it just me or theyre gonna bring the non-popular ones. NOOOOOO!
  89. wait wait wait…
    ONLY 2NE1 BECAUSE OF DARA?
    DID PEOPLE FORGET ABOUT RAIN? im dawm sure ever since Full House hit the scene, Rain is probably highest in demand. now i cannot say for sure because i dont live in the Philippines nor am i Filipino in such a community but from previous research (yeah, watched videos, read articles about Bi-Kyo promotions for full house), philippines loveddd Bi and full house
    • rain isn’t that popular in the PH. full house was only shown in GMA (manila suburbs is their only turf) and not in ABS-CBN (the station that ultimately claims nationwide patronage). Unlike rain, sandara park can be considered bigger than him because she used to come out in ABS-CBN. Honestly, 2NE1 isnt that big of a deal in the PH but people who have heard of em do acknowledge them. (Mind you, during our school’s recent sportsfest, a group representing one college in our university used 2NE1’s Fire as their backtrack for their contest piece on the Pop Dance competition.) One thing also why 2NE1 is much acceptable in the PH isn’t just becoz of DARA but also the type of music they play. I highly believe that people would tend to classify SNSD’s Gee and Wondergirls’ Nobody as the same stature of OPM Novelty Songs and that is not a good thing.
      **OPM Novelty songs are considered lame and cheap though they are a bit catchy and upbeat.
      **The state of Philippine Music industry tends to favor towards rock bands and balladeers and divas and sometimes even a lil acoustic group and bossanova crooners and RNB singers. Pop is nowhere to be seen right now which is prolly why Kpop is able to get a lil taste of the market. This may seem a lil out of the box but I hope Sarah Geronimo would continue doing something like that of her recent hit, “Recordbreaker”. It was Lady Gaga-ish but def refreshing especially its by a local artist and I also think she’s the only who can get away with it due to her stature in the industry today and that she might pave the way for Pinoy Pop to bloom.
      • Pop=popular music; hence in the Philippines Rock, Ballad, R&B = POP. What is not present is BUBBLEGUM music which compose majority of K-Pop
  90. yahay! but i seriously think us filipinos should also have our own type of music heck the only filipino songs i know are porlly bebot and the national anthem >_< i wish we had mainstream music T-T (*all my opinion)
  91. There are a lot of talented artists here in the Philippines who could reach notes I’ve never even knew existed. Okay, I’m exaggerating. But the point is..Filipino singers are real singers. They are more inclined to ballads rather than ‘pop’.
    But we have our own tastes. I have my reasons for liking kpop so much. I like their artists’ versatility. They could both sing and dance. You would rarely find someone like that here. The only artists I know who could do both are Gary V. (but he’s old already) and Billy Crawford. We need more “Billy Crawford” here. Maybe talent agencies here could learn a thing or two from Korean agencies (YG, SM, JYP, DSP etc…)
    Local singers are good. They sing well and could reach really really high notes. But they can put me to sleep. Younger generation wants songs that they can dance along to and that’s where kpop comes in. 😀
    I think kpop has a relatively strong fanbase here. Have you guys even seen how many people attended Pops in Seoul’s shoot here? Plus, Super Junior’s 3jib already placed #1 on two music charts here. I believe that proves how passionate we kpop fans could be. So those groups mentioned above coming here might not be impossible after all.
    PS. Filipinos are NOT rude. Most of us are actually really compassionate. You just encountered the wrong people.
  92. filipino kpop fans need to unite so they can be heard. i think there lies the challenge.
    i think the most likely easiest to invite at this point is 2NE1 coz of Dara. maybe if the fans & ABS-CBN join forces, they might actually come. i’m filipino & it will suck 4 me if they come coz i live in the US.
    come on, guys, make it happen! 🙂
  93. CAN THEY INVADE WHEN IM VISITING INSTEAD ?!?!?
  94. For some people who are RACISTS, saying bad things about filipino fans of kpop.. What’s wrong with u guys? I bet you hate sandara with all your might huh? Filipinos love 2ne1, most especially sandara park. Some “rude” comments in the net, claiming that they are fans of 2ne1, were just created by 2ne1 haters so that fans of the other kpop groups would also hate 2ne1. And i’m pretty sure of this. Like the one above, she’s an obvious hater of dara. She keeps on commenting about the rudeness of others but she can’t keep track of her own ATTITUDE and VALUES. Oh well, that’s life. SOME people just love to pull their fellowmen down. 😐 remember, karma would get its toll someday. Be warned. 🙂
  95. It’s interesting to see how people reacted here (and on omonatheydidnt LJ community too).
    I’m really surprised by seeing how people kind of underestimate PH music scene. I see quite many songs performed by PH singers and I must say they are good. They just don’t tend to go for pop. They instead tend go for more like “harder” tastes (rock, jazz, ballad – especially powerful ballad – genres etc) but isn’t that a good thing?
    I mean look at how good Charice is when she’s performing “note to god”. I thought it’s extremely well-done for a girl of her age that you hardly find it in Kpop scene (yea, even American people thought she can be another Whitney Houston in the future – you just can’t find it on Kpop scene, can you?). And when I go to dig into PH singers for more, there are more talents like Charice to show off (but I guess they don’t have big sponsors).
    That’s why I understand why some PH people don’t favor Kpop (it’s like PH music scene is americanized with better vocals so why PH listeners should listen to Kpop, which is also americanized with bubble-gum or pop-ish style and not up to par with local singers?).
    But I agree that PH entertainment shows are erm lame, which is a shame to those seriously talented singers. Of course Kpop is fun (it’s pop in the end) but I think as international fans, we should not judge or bash PH people for their tastes. They’ve got their history and so do you.
    If you like, then you like, right? No need to say “PH people are rude” or “PH music is no fun or lame” or “PH people should overjoy with Kpop coming to PH” or alike. Let PH people decide for their own music tastes. Peace ^^
    • THIS. (:
      i agree that people shudnt judge Phil people just as fast. the charice girl got quite popular here in us she’s mad talented and i bet she can sing far better than all the other korean artists out there. just sayin.
    • Amen, bro.
      Esp those who wholeheartedly BASh everything OPM doesn’t know much about OPM. there are lots of good music especially in the indie scene.
      IThese, people it’s like they ahve subtle ‘colonial mentality’. Back then, Filipinos would look down on their own in favor of Western products. Now, they trash booth Filipino and Western music as if K-Pop is that original. K-pop OBVIOUSLY was derived from the US/UK boyband/girlband(BSB, NSync, Spice Girls, Moffats, Hanson) phenomenon in the 90’s(Like you mentioned, they a lot of K-pop are derived from US/UK BUBBLEGUM POP). Only that OPm didn’t really embrace boyband/girlband thing though people patronized them.
      While I do not mind the trend, I think those who explicitly condemn OPM are self-haters whishing they were born Korean with white skin and small almond shape eyes, straign black hair Korean
  96. I think only 2NE1 is going to be in demand over there…because Sandara is so popular and everyone keeps asking when she’ll come to perform in the Phil with her other bandmates……fair chance to say they will go there and perform…….the rest, I don’t really know..lol
  97. […] Complete article here. […]
  98. Only 2ne1 bring in PH…Im sure they have big fanbase over there.
    But yeah! truthfully KPOP fanbase in Phil. arent big enough to support them coz most Pinoys are still into OPM and Western music but which is good and KPOP waves in PH it is just starting the trend but i think it will take a long way to accept KPOP in PH especially Filipinos dont understand what are they singing and they make parodies of the song “Nobody” which is the only word they can easily understand. Pinoys can be clever they make another word or lyrics to it. haha
    When it comes Filipino music, Yes I can say we are left behind coz our music is more of Rocks and Ballads we only listen to American POP. and we dont have this so called “PINOY POP” or even a singer to represent that word. But as time goes by…with these KPOP trends PH can make a Good POP music with our own touch. And koreans you are so WELCOME in PH.
  99. NOOOO. D: Don’t come here. D:
    I’d rather see my favorite kpop stars in Korea and in any other part in Asia rather than seeing them here in the Phils. D: It’s quite complicated and I couldn’t really explain it but, NOO. D: TT___TT
    *and I think I’m the only one not grateful of them coming here. pftttt. sorry, my opinion. D:* -staab-
    • omg! my sentiments exactly! I wanted to cry when snsd, wondergirls,f(x) and 2ne1 started playing in Myx. :(( The philippines made kpop jologs!
  100. they dont seem to over joyed about it.
    fuckem and come to america!
  101. lol, people lets not be too judgy 😛
    Don’t judge someone by race x) honestly a TON of people are like that, even korean netizens can be cruel.
    I mean I don’t mean to bring this up again, but like jaebom left because of them.
    Everyone in ANY culture can be rude or racist, my friends (different races like italian, chinese, etc.) would say those type of things about any other celebrity who ARENT an american celebrity.
    ANYWAYS, aww! I’m soo envious! When will they ever have a concert in CANADA?! ;(
  102. I want SS501 to visit the Philippines. 🙂
  103. 2ne1 is big in the philippines… but i dont think kpop has a big enough fanbase in the Phil…. i mean alot of people love kpop but is it big enough…..as much as i love kpop 2ne1 is the only logical one to bring… but 2ne1 seems really busy…
    just because most of the comments are rude it doesnt represent the phil as a whole… pep(the website) is a magnet for haters
  104. IF THEY Whant dara lat her go and 2ne1 in Korea
  105. Comments there were mostly bashing. A lot of Filipinos really like KPOP. Hopefully, I can be part of the demands, surveys, blogs and signature drives. I really really want them to come here. Though it’s a waste that 2PM (if ever) are going to perform here as 6 members only 😦
  106. those saying DBSK, 2pm are kinda stupid (controversies?) plus those (DBSK, 2pm) groups + SS501, Big Bang, Suju, SNSD, Shinee are way up there…well, I don’t know but 2NE1 is the most logical group to bring (If they’re the ones who will come…I won’t watch…I don’t like them and their fans) but sandara has some rude and annoying fans who will support her.
    yeah kill OPM more!
  107. 2PM! ❤
  108. haha i cant wait for this…
    they need to send big bang and 2ne1!!!
    haha i really think filipino music is really good.
    but ya i agree we are talented but we dont sell good.
    out only bankable artist is like SARAH GERONIMO
    and thats pretty much it…. so i wish they send them.
    and have a duet with filipino artists lol.
  109. I think 2ne1 should come to the philippines.
  110. Everyone in the Philippines are lucky.
    I am actually quite jealous and wished that I lived in Asia. I just wish instead of K-Pop artists invading a country in Asia because it is close and people can relate or going to America to branch out and hopefully become successful (no-one has successfully done it this year),…
    …Why not come to London?
    • exactly i am filipino and i when to the philippines in the summer but now i am back in london for school they are so lucky even though i am from there ughhhhh
  111. they should bring kpop artists here because even Miggy Chavez of Chicosci craves over Big Bang songs 🙂
  112. Dbsk,Wondergirls,Bigbang,2PM&2ne1 Fighting <3<3
  113. i’m a filipino kpop fan but i’d rather see big bang and others in korea and other countries than here in the philippines. It’s complicated. A lot of Filipinos are so americanized that they cannot accept other cultures. And some people are just in denial that kpop stars especially the most popular are more world class than local artists. Sure, a lot of local singers can belt/sing really well but they don’t have the “selling” qualities such as looks, fashion-consciousness, dancing abilities, attitude, catchy music, and other talents (which big bang have for example, lol im biased!)…
    Wow this is long, sorry…
    • i agree… so many filipinos are americanized… T____T
      and yeah, filipino artists belt it a lot… belt it too much… that it becomes *EHKK!*
      like when 4-5 or more belters sing together on stage.. mannn,, they almost DON’T KNOW how to harmonize… they always overpower each other… and don’t care how the WHOLE sounds… they just care that their voice have to OVERpower others on stage… which destroys my ear eventually….
      i hope filipino artists learn teamwork… coz they are already good solo artists…
      that’s why i’m into kpop,, i love the groups… shows unity which i never saw in filipino entertainment…
      • Seriously!
        (I’m Filipino too)
        I really HATE the Pinoy music industry right now because they COPY almost everyone… NO originality. Only in their old ballad songs..
        I really do not want them to start copying Korea, and they’ve already started. xP
      • may i agree? i, too, am a filipino, and i hate how solo artists always contribute songs from americans..and make a remake sometimes. it always gives me the creeps. hope that some KPOP artists would really come here. 🙂 i`ve been participating a lot from sandara recently.. 🙂 hope that 2ne1 really comes.
      • oh my gosh. i have fellows. i also hate how filipino artists copy other’s style! i mean, WHAT THE HECK! and i’m a filipino too.
    • yeah,,u’r right..i rather go to korea to watch BIG BANG than to watch them here..A lot of filipinos love Americans than their fellow Asians..
      • hey many filipinos are also koreanized example my classmates my friends they are already influenzed by me. they also liked korean song. even artists here and vjs loved them so much thats why it is already taking over fm station, local tv, cable channels, and even malls they play korean songs because of hallyu!!! i like some pinoy music specially spongecola. why won’t people like kpop at the same time opm??? maybe someday we will have our own boy groups and see them like korean performers. kekeke
    • Yes, I agree!
      I hope Filipinos can make a few pop groups like Koreans SNSD and Big Bang and Super Junior. All we have is depressing alternative rock. We have a huge population who loves KPop and JPop, and I hope we can make FPop. Our music needs to improve. Filipinos have such big egos sometime that they can’t cooperate in groups. I hope we can discipline ourselves and form good pop groups like the Koreans. We have the talent and the beauty. I hope the Koreans can make a good impression on our music industry! I hope we can have great music someday too. I’m so excited for the bands to come to the Philippines!! I hope SNSD and SHINee and Big Bang and Davichi come!! Come to Manila KPop Stars!! Sa rang hae yo!
  114. Filipino POPL ARE RUD
    • I bet you only know a few that’s why your saying that. That’s not true at all, there are a lot of nice filipinos out there. You just encountered the wrong ones
    • I agree Filipinos are rude, they’re like all over the internet with their stupid comments
      • stop generalizing. all people are rude in some sort of way. not just one race. and you think your not rude? let me laugh out loud then
      • now who’s rude saying stuff like that to the Filipinos!
      • one word: RACIST!
      • you’re probably just jealous. STFO if you got nothing nice to say.
      • hey why are you saying that? isn’t your attitude being rude? your generalizing!! Koreans Japanese Americans etc says that Filipinos are really really nice and hospitable we like welcoming people, the girl was right you just encountered mafia. mafias are everywhere they can’t be just in one place your breaking our hearts(filipinos)
    • FILIPINO ARE RUDE PEOPLE?? yeah right.
      first, if you call FILIPINO RUDE PEOPLE., come on, like we never tried to ask someone kill themselves and throw them out the country because they say that their country is gay.
      my point here is that don’t say that Filipino People are rude as a whole, just like how i’m saying that NOT ALL Koreans are cruel.
