We saw how the idols flooded and dominated the Korean music market in 2009. A year where there were both the girlgroup and boygroup hype periods. But coming 2010, the Korean music market will take a change. With the comeback of ‘luxurious’ solo singers, it seems that the atmosphere of the Korean music scene will be different.
We are seeing the comeback of female vocal powerhouses like Lee Hyori, Yoon MiRae, YangPa, JOO; and also male crooners like Shin SeungHoon, Kim DongRyul, Yoo HeeYeol and Sung ShiKyung etc.
2010 is said to be the start of luxurious solo singers’ generation.
The boom of the strong personality female singers
We see one of the most striking of all the comebacks are those of the female solo singers. Because they are the ones with strong personalities. From ‘trendsetter’ Lee Hyori to sensational vocals YangPa and JOO, music fans will get to feast on various styles of music from them.
Here are the rest of the female solo comebacks.
- Lee Hyori – one of the most anticipated female comeback singers of the year. Known for having great dance and songs personalities, she is set to release her album early this year. Currently it is known that 80% of her new album is completed.
- Yoon MiRae – known for her rhythmical rapping and great ballads, it is announced that she will comeback mid-January. There are also music which she had personally composed for the album.
- YangPa – she will comeback with a new minialbum coming February after 2 years away from the music scene.
- JOO – Anticipated JYP ballad singer JOO will be back. Despite her tender age, she is known for her sensational vocals, and because of this specialty it seems that she will be back again with ballad music for her comeback this year.
The inflood of male musicians
It seems that the comeback of the male musicians will give a different treat to the ears. And some of the representative singers in this area are Shin SeungHoon, Yoo HeeYeol and Kim DongRyul etc.
Here are the male musician comebacks:
- Shin SeungHoon will release the last of his 3-parts minialbum series. It will be his 20th year anniversary this year since his singer debut.
- Ballad singers Kim DongRyul and Sung ShiKyung will also be back with some sensational music. It will be his comeback after 2 years for Kim DongRyul, his last album in 2008 was a success. And it will be Sung ShiKyung’s 1st album release since he returned to the music scene after coming out of the army.
- Yoo HeeYeol will also back with some sad ballads.
Idol singers continue to reign?
Of course, there will be many idol singers’ comeback in 2010. Already, we know about upcoming comebacks for 2AM, 2NE1, KARA, So Nyeo Shi Dae etc. These idols will follow up with the great popularity they received from their mini or full-length albums released in 2009.
But with the comeback of the ‘luxurious’ solo singers, it will be a right-on face-off between the solo long-running and new idol singers.

About every 2-3 years there’s a new trend in Korea.
Starting from 2000, it goes to various singers (from ballad, to rock – idol groups along with successful solo singers… to selling xxx,xxx amount of cds… everything was beautiful TT___TT)), shifting to sexy (04-06), to growing idol groups (05-present), to cuteness overload(07-08), to Tell Me craze beginning of repetition (07-09), rainbow dressed aliens (latter part of 08-09), autotune and hip hop (09),
This is why I usually don’t care about how the way the K-industry is because the trend shifts every 2-3 years~
If you look back, K-pop is constantly moving. Of-course, this is usual with many areas, but with K-pop, many singers tend to lose their own flavor and go with the flow with the trend. That’s why it seems theres a small variety because it becomes hard to differentiate the styles of other artists.
Which is why this is such good news to hear that 010’s list of performers seems to have a large variety~
I’m not sure about who will “reign”, but it makes everything way more exciting. K-music programs are getting boring (no talk and introduce album, same people every couple wks, every month…) and sometimes the same people win the charts every week… I want to see competition!
And we all know that competition raises the industry… the year end awards are more fun, and programs get more busy when top stars make their comeback. It’s a pity for unknown debuting rookie groups because now their chances of getting to the top are decreased by 50% in 2010 compared to 09 as programs want the stars on it….
And where is that Billboard chart that was suppose to come >:O

Or the new award show layout (MAMA wasn’t that grand…) that was all suppose to be done in the end of 09!?

I can’t believe you put Hyori in the category of “female vocal powerhouses”. She may be popular, but I think she is one of the weakest solo singers out there.
i have to agree with you that Hyori is not really a good singer, but she is very charismatic on stage
