YG·SM·JYP- The race to have own representative idol group to survive the competition

kpop_290309

We are now in a generation when once you have one hit-song-producing idol group in your company, you will survive well in the competition in the Kpop market of this era.

Kpop big players YG Entertainment, SM Entertainment, DSP Entertainment and JYP Entertainment have been up busy with their plans to stay in the competition, and they all each had their representative female/male idol group.

The first company to push a big-scale project in year 2009 is YG. They preparing to debut a female group with the help of the name of their existing group Big Bang, which debuted in 2006. Known as ‘female Big Bang‘ until recently, the group official name is set to be ‘21, To Anyone’.

21, who is set to debut in May, has come together to sing a CM song with group Big Bang. And this has produced great synergy for the debuting group. The song the 2 groups sang together ‘Lollipop’ has risen up various online music chart steadily, standing in same level as other singers like Son DamBi, Seo Taiji, Super Junior etc. Not only so, being the new YG female group in so many years, there is more anticipation for this upcoming group.

As for JYP, who created the ‘So Hot’ craze last year with its girl group WonderGirls, have no other plans to make another representative male group. Because already, they are covering both groups of fans loving ballads and dance songs with their male groups 2AM and 2PM.

Recently into their individual activities like drama and musical, group SS501‘s company DSP Entertainment is also putting its hopes on its girl group KARA who debuted in 2007 and was given the nickname of ‘the 2nd Fin.K.L‘.

And KARA was said to have live up to the name of South Korea’s representative girl group with the title song ‘Honey’ shooting up to the #1 spot on various music programs and charts from their 2nd minialbum released last December. With this, they join the league of girl groups like So Nyeo Shi Dae and WonderGirls.

And lastly, company SM Entertainment which gave birth to many Kpop legends like H.O.T and BoA have its representative girl group So Nyeo Shi Dae dominate the first half of 2009 with the song ‘Gee’.

SM’s own representative group Dong Bang Shin Ki, already with their numerous fanbases established overseas, also said, “Whenever we turn on the TV, we see So Nyeo Shi Dae.”

One of the Kpop producers provided, “We have stepped into an era where you just need one successful singer to be safe in competition in the Kpop market. With a successful male or female group in the company, the new incoming singers get the benefit of attracting more attention to themselves and having more advertisement. And right now, this is the time when idol groups are viewed as important to hit into the market of the music fans in their teens and twenties. And that is why many companies are working hard to push their male or female idol groups.”

With this, there are news that group Jewelry‘s company is also in the midst of preparation for the debut of a new male group.

I think bringin in 21 as an example to this is so apt.

  1. sandara park
    try mo punta sa
    pinas maki pag duet
    ka kay kim mas gusto
    namin ikaw dahil
    maganda kapa
    ikaw ang the best hmmm..

  2. my main focus this year on kpop got to be kara .i do think that kara really turn the game up me this year, their song honey is very popular these day . they even beat gee at mcountdown to be no1 . netizen even said that kara is a part of the BIG3 along with snsd and wg .
but they still have a long way to go beat wg , because wg is like the number 1st girl group in korea rite now and yeah 2nd is snsd so i hope the ranking can change . we’ll see…

  3. so far the only new group that impresses me is shinee…they’re good at dancing and singing and their lives are solid….as for 2pm/2am…i think they’re better at singing then dancing…ukiss and others…whatever happen to them?

  4. I love Sandara and Park Boom

  5. i love 21!

  6. excuse me where is super junior ?

  7. All I read is BLABLABLA….
Just produce some good music instead of ALWAYS competing against eachother with girl/boy groups…

  8. im a YG Entertainment fan/person thing forever ;DDD
id say that the groups/bands in YG are my NO.1 and will always be xDDD

    HWAITING YG!!!!!

  9. But its the competition that makes everything exciting XD

“SNSD pretty much owned the beginning of 2009”

But there wasn’t much competition. Most big stars came out in 08, mostly in the latter half, so they were gone for early 09.

  10. its irritating…WHY DO THESE COMPANIES HAVE TO COMPETE???!!!

Cant they just do what they do best???
Giving us artists or groups to love and cherish???
Instead of competing with each other???
I love all the groups mentioned here,
because they all contributed on making the fans really happy and such.
They are in the same country, why not just compete with other countries????

  11. @daizukun –>> CL is the leader of YG’s new group 21 XD

i first started liking kpop because of BIGBANG…
although i listen to other people too
BIGBANG will always be my number one &&
    now i love 21 too
    soo YG FIGHTING!!<3<3
but all the best to everyone ^_^

  12. @nickynisa,I dont think they mentioned Super Junior because they already mentioned DBSK who are the most successful male group in SM and they did the same for every company, mentioning the most successful male and female idol groups in each company.if their was no DBSK then Suju would be mentioned.

  13. seriously i don’t think kara is in the same league with wonder girls and snsd.. lol..

and ss501 is always the underdog.. underrated.. luckily BOF is so successfull and more ppl recognize them them now..

dbsk and big bang are on their own league..

why this article didn’t mention super junior?? they are doing great with their new album..

  14. Each company has their strong points, but I adore YG Family ❤

  15. @treetop
    what’s company is CL?

i don’t like to compare artists either but i gotta say SM, JYP, and YG are the strong competitors. DSP is good too but they don’t really know how to promote their artist that well…SS501 is really good and charming but they’re SOOOOOO underrated!! i kinda feel bad for them 😦 same goes for KARA! but i’m glad that they are getting the attention they deserve this year! 😀 i hope A’ST1 gets more attention too!! they’re actually pretty good!!

  16. GOOOOOOOOO YG !!!!!!!!!!!!! (:

  17. This blog’s great!! Thanks :).

  18. dsp ftw? it doesnt even stand a chance.

    CL FTW.
but i love BoA too so..

    GOGO YG, SM!

  19. well, i’m looking forward to dsp stars. i like all the others but right now they all seem to be on break and i rarely listen to sm unless it’s super junior. big bang is ok. but i really like SS501 and KARA, that’s about it.

    DSP FTW!!!!

  20. What XxX said is so true.
Honestly, it’s just… YG and SM that has all the heat. But I hate all the comparisons between groups, cause they all have a bad and good side of them.

  21. DSP still has a long way to go.
There’s only 3 top dogs: SM, YG, & JYP

  22. I don’t care who will going to be champion or whatever..
    but I love JYP family.
when the girls & the boys interacted together
    I found it’s so adorable & cute
Park Jin Young seems nice boss too.
He can make fun to his artists,
treat them as like his children esp WG.
He’s not money hungry & want his artist to reach another level.
    that’s enough for me.

  23. What is apt.? Lol.

  24. @Angel-that’s because it is Big Bang feat.21,BB are contracted with Cyon and 21 featured in the song with them.people still don’t get that this is a CF song like BB did for Fila and Hite beer.it was made for the lollipop cyon phone.I agree with XxX and BBTVXQLOVE.

  25. […] source: kbites YG·SM·JYP- The race to have own representative idol group to survive the […]

  26. i really love most of the groups listed
    i hate comparing..
i don’t really like “Lollipop” that much but it’s addicting
and i understand it is just a CF song, but i AM looking forward to their debut even more nowadays keke
i’m interested for the comeback of SS501 since they’ve gotten pretty popular lately.
best of luck to DBSK overseas
and i hope SNSD enjoys the break they deserve 🙂

  27. I really wanna take a liking to 21, but Lollipop is not all that great and is really more of Big Bang feat. 21 rather than a collab or 21 feat. Big Bang.

  28. SNSD and DBSK are #1 female and male groups :p

  29. @XxX, almost said everything I wanted to.

I love my YG family, YG just knows how to appeal to people, with music, dance, fashion, etc. Just look at 21, who haven’t officially debuted, but their song is topping the charts (Which I can’t stop listening to!). As for Big Bang, no words needed, just look at them.
SM Entertainment is just whoa too, but TVXQ being in Japan, it only makes YG stronger (in Korea). JYP only has WG going for him. I love 2PM, and they’re ‘popular,’ but JYP did say they’re one group that will blow us away, but they didn’t, I like ’em more cause they are cute and their personalities, not their singing/songs.

I’m soooooooo looking forward to 21’s debut. I want more hip-hop/rap girl groups, no more cutesy………….

  30. To be honest i think the real competition only lies between YG, JYP & SM. Mainly SM & YG, but the wondergirls are strong competitors too. DSP aren’t acknowledge that much and to be really hones KARA & SS501 Don’t really posses what Big Bang, DBSK, SNSD & Wonder Girls have. Though maybe this year with the sucess of BOF maybe SS501 wil finally get the credit they DESERVE, but even so; Big Bang & DBSK are in a legue of their own.

  31. well..lollipop was jus a cf song..its more like bigbangs cf song cause they had the most part..but i do like the begining…how it went lolli lolli lollipop..something like that..then gd says..thats not how we do it..

  32. im scared for all the companies, YG Fighting!

  33. go sm~!

  34. I love the charisma of 21 even though i’m probably in the minority who though that lollipop was a mediocre song (totally generic, nothing new to the kpop scene, and over use of techno-like recent BB songs). I really hope these girl will have a unique sound, and i wish they succeed.

I’m generally a JYP camper so i can’t wait for WonderGirls & 2PM’s comeback. Plus i love 2AM (amazing vocalist) and their current song. Also looking forward to HyunA’s group, i really wanna know what kinda sound they’re aiming for.

DSP are also good, I think SS501 have finally managed to secure a good name for themselves in the kpop world (mainly thanks to HJ,). I adore YS vocals and i hope they have a good comeback song so that they can remain popular. Kara also are doing well these days, their fans have pretty much doubled in the last couple of months.

SNSD pretty much owned the beginning of 2009, they’ll be back in June so i’ll wait for them. Dunno much about dbsk.

I don’t think one group will come out top, all the groups will probably take t in turn to be popular (just like how Kara and SNSD were some of the big players in January).

    Let the battle begin lol.

  35. GO YG FAMILY! (:
BIG BANG & 21 will totally rule this year! ;DD

  36. @ Nia : I thought YG did have two female group : Big Mama and Swi.T . Now is “21”times

  37. go SM !
    SM FTW !

  38. well, SNSD (and BOF..lol..) practically owned the first half on 2009. So it’s pretty exciting to see who will dominate in the 2nd half. 😀

  39. @BANGBANG : SeoKyeong knows everything… and an older post already deals with this

  40. Wow… it’s like a war; idols as soldiers to defend their company. Not very healthy… and they are always working as crazy people.
Hope that 21 will make themselves a BIG SPOT in all this AND i hope that they won’t work 2years in a row without vacation as their BB oppas (well i know Sandra is a noona LOL)

  41. How come you didn’t mention that JYP is releasing Hyun Ah’s comeback group soon? Or did you not know about the news yet? 🙂

  42. Yup. I agree with Nia.
We need something new & fresh to Kpop instead of
    so many idol group singer

  43. 21 is YG’s second girl group. The first was Swi.T.
    I didn’t know Jewelry’s company was creating a male group o.o
